My boyfriend just bought Guild Wars a few weeks ago as a game we could play together - he's a console gamer and I'm an old school D&D gaming geek girl - and we've been having a lot of fun in pre-searing. We're trying to make sure we're both good and ready to go to post, so we've been picking up dye and salvaging items so we can both get the good beginning armor in post relatively quickly. The question is what to bring to post of the drops you can get in presearing, for an 11th warrior/mesmer (me) and a 10th elementalist/monk (him)? We'd love some input on what of the following should be brought. We already know to bring all the dyes we found, though we've never found any of the rarer colors.

1. Gold. Some people say bring 2400 to get the good armor fast, some people say leave the gold behind for your pre alts as it's easier to farm in post if you don't go there at too low a level. We don't have much gold now as our charr runs have all had absolutely horrible drops. Not one bag or kit and only two not very valuable runes and some crappy purples between the both of us in all the runs we've ever done. Never even seen a bag or anything else very good drop, and I've cleared the boss pit at least a dozen times.

2. Unsalvaged runes. The charr kit is beyond our means in pre as we spent all our accumulated money buying charr bags OTHER people were lucky enough to get.

3. Common salvage items - scales, ingots, planks, glittering dust, bones, granite slabs, cloth, tanned hide squares, plant fibers. The question is which of them we will need personally and which we can sell to other players for more than we can in pre.

4. Not yet salvaged but stackable items like spider webs (we can't seem to get silk out of them in pre), skale fins, unnatural seeds and charr carvings.

5. Purple weapons which may sell for more in post. Screenshots at http://www.snakegetters.com/gw/

6. What's the value on belt pouches and charr bags in post?

Your expert advice would be much appreciated!

1. 2,4k is a lot for first armor. You should get at most 1,5k each of you, so you have a nice armor a bit better than stater.

2. Bad choice... Charr bags are for pre-only characters. I mean you can use in post, but no real point.

3. Depending on your profession, some of those items are used to make armor, others can be sold to merchants.

4. You can get silk only with expert salvage kit. And for post, those items are most likely useless for you.

5. Same as in 4, those blues and purples have no value on the market, so you can just merch them.

6. Nothing, a lot less than 100g.

Here's my point of view; merch/salvage all weapons of it except the 2 runes. Sorry to say no but, one will buy non max weapon in post.

Silk, you're more likely to salvage some with expert salvage kit.

The crafting material you can have a nice little bundle of gold from the Material trader for it

Some of those items have no use in post searing. Again, check out http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Collectable_drop to see what can be used for what.

Those items won't be of much value in post - too easy to get. Unless you need them yourself, sell or merch them.
EDIT: If either of you plays a caster class, you may want to take the Holy Staff of Fortitude with you into post because you can salvage the Staff Wrapping of Fortitude (health+27) off of it with an expert salvage kit, and use it on another staff.

Belt pouches and bags can be bought from merchants in post. Belt pouches are 100g. 10-slot bags would be 100g for bag + 500g for Rune of Holding. Charr bags are actually quite expensive, but handy to have in pre. They have no benefit over regular post bags (+runes) though.

your putting to much thought into it. if you are any sort of experienced gamer GW will be extremely easy. you are both easily high enough level to leave.

Keep dyes and salvage materials for armor, I believe warrior armor needs tanned hides and iron ingots, check that above link. Sell ALL other stuff that you are not holding or have in a weapon slot. My first character left at lvl 11 and with about 2k gold, you will be fine. The only thing is you leave the comfort of pre-searing for the mysterious, harder, post-searing areas. The game gets more fun after this. When you do get to post-searing, all the stuff that you have equipped will be woefully inadequate. Have fun.

Hold dyes and materials for post. If you're in a guild, you could transfer gold to a pre character if you wanted and ask guildies for help on new amor when you move on.I think my second time going through Ascalon, I toughed it out without new armor until Yak's bend, and I was probably level 7 at most. Beginner armor is dirt cheap, and most established guilds I've seen are more than willing to drop a few coins on new members' armor (looks like armor in ascalon is about 100 gold and 24 non-rare materials or so to craft), especially if these are your first 2 characters.

Some Paragon may buy that shield Tall Shield 10 armor Req 4 tactics -4 dmg 15%

Save the armor with runes Salvage them with an Expert salvage Kit the +10 health rune is worth a little money (don’t get to excited a little)

Personally I just take dyes and my weapon I am using. There are 2 vendors right away when get to post that sell armor one is better than the other check them both out. Play for fun… I played for a long time on my first character before I could afford the new armor. Salvage things as you go for material. When you get farther in the game Id your items before you sell them you get more for them. Collect better weapons as they drop. It is not that bad to have a low weapon You could probably just send a trade message looking for (insert you weapon) Max dmg 100 gold and someone may give you a gold weapon for it. I would do it for free but some may give you a good one for 100. Don’t beg for everything people hate that. But a lot of people have gold weapons that serve no purpose to them in there storage. Edit take the fortitude +27 wrap and salvage it It will come in handy

There really isn't anything you NEED to bring thru the searing imo. There were some nice items at one time in Pre. There is still one longsword with a Crystalline skin if you want that. There used to be a sword with an inherent +5armor while enchanted but they got altered by Anet quite some time ago.
If you have finished with the quests in Pre then just make the jump imo. My first char was lvl 11 or so I think when I left Pre(didn't even know lol) but I rushed most of the rest of my characters thru it.

I would also recommend holding onto the Holy Staff of Fortitude & runes out of the items shown. You'll probably use the staff for awhile, then salvage the mods out of it when you find a base item with better stats. Crafting material can be held as well since you'll either use it or sell it (if you have space).

Another possible income source is bringing Ale from the Bear Hunters with you. At 100g each in Post, a stack of 255 ales could net you a tidy profit (25,500g). But that requires 43 trips for a stack - it gets repetitive. I know they recently did something to the Bear Hunters so not sure if this was nerfed. You will probably have to get to Lion's Arch to sell the ale as it is a major market - larger than Ascalon City. That will take a little while unless you get assistance or just do missions only to arrive near LA and then hoof it the last bit.

Actually Hunter's Ale sells for 100 gold in pre also, so I've just been selling it. I can almost never get more than two at a time since the bear killing can be a little buggy and not all the bears I kill actually register with Bruse even if the timer has been started.

I would 100% make another character, and give him the charr bags to hold...they are invaluable but only in presearing..once you get to post, they are no better than the 600 gold bag you can buy from the merchant...

if anything, sell the bag before you leave...you'll make 1K and then buy a new one 10 minutes later for 600 gold...

Well, actually, if I recall, you can't get a rune of holding right away. It's worth the 400g not to bother with the hassle.

I've heard that you can make a load salvaging your spider webs in post, never tried it myself. For the rest, check the wiki for the collector, and sell them unless the collector has something you like.

Pre weapons are generally junk once you get to post. No one wants to buy them b/c they are nowhere near max. The only remotely valuable pre weapons I can think of are the "crystalline" longsword and 0-req weapons and (especially) shields with better stats than max minus the penalty for not meeting the req. For instance, a max shield on a character who doesn't meet the req gives 8 armor, so 0-req 9 and 10 armor shields can be worth something if their mods are good.
